WALKING IN RHYTHM – Part Three

Cathryn   -

For the past few weeks I’ve been writing about the importance of rhythm – in music and in life. We know that rhythm is the backbone of music.

If you need proof, sit in on a beginning percussion class. Having rhythm in our lives is equally important. If the rhythm our life has runs counter to or over our values, needs and vision, it is just noise.

In order to silence the noise, I’ve mentioned that we might need to consider:

a shift in prioritizing

saying ‘no’

putting our need for rest and time with Jesus first

setting boundaries with our time.

And I mentioned that God has a plan for how to make that happen; the reason I think that God has a plan is because…God created rhythm. God knows what a healthy human life-tempo is supposed to be.

The Bible says it this way in Genesis 1:

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. Then he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day” and the darkness “night.”

And evening passed and morning came, marking the first day.”

Did you catch that? “evening passed and morning came, marking the first day.” And, as it turns out, the second day, the third day, the fourth day, the fifth day and the sixth day. Evening, then morning.

Evening is when God put the day to rest, and since we are made in his image, I think we are made to do the same. I know that isn’t rocket-science, but how much of our “day” carries into our “evening”? How much of our “evening” is actually just a long day? How might the rhythm of your life be different if you actually set a time for “evening” and put the day to rest?

(I know, I know. Sometimes there is just no way around a long day. But I believe those should be the rare exception; some of us make them the rule). What would need to change for that to happen? Yes. That is the hard part. It is not always easy to reclaim that which God intends to be ours. But living into the abundant life that Christ Jesus came to give us is worth whatever it takes to make the change.

And here’s the most beautiful part:

Between the evening and the morning, God’s got it.

All of it. For all of us.

So when we call it a day, everything we treasure, everything we worry over, everything we work on, everything we should have gotten done, everything we need to do tomorrow…

it’s all in the most capable, most loving hands.
