Summer Mission Trips
Week-long mission trips are for 8th grade and above.
We run a summer camp ministry for kids at Bethany UMC Brooklyn and in the surrounding neighborhood. The day camp is an extended version of a normal VBS to better serve the parents. Science lesson, games, trips to the park, lunch in a public school, and a service project at a local senior center are all part of this trips experience. The purpose of this trip is to get a taste of urban ministry and NYC living (from subway commutes to living from a dorm room at Pratt Institute). Over the course of the week, the kids grow close together while serving and get to come home with not only a great experience but some spectacular friendships.
During this week, youth will gain technical skills, build relationships with homeowners, strengthen relationships with their fellow youth and adult leaders, and begin to develop a lifelong passion for service in mission. We travel to Frostburg, MD and are put into work teams around the area through the Camp Hope Organization which has been serving those in need in the Appalachian region for over 40 years. Work teams will do an assortment of repair-filled tasks such as building ramps, sealing roofs, painting both interior and exterior parts of the houses, and planting gardens. After returning from the work sites, everyone joins back together to talk about what they did that day, enjoy delicious homemade meals from local families, and have a worship service. We touch people’s lives through God’s love and our serving--we repair their homes, help restore their lives, and watch in amazement as their gratitude and love grow for us and God.
